Maisonneuve - “Worth the Risk” by Alison Motluk

The oncologically hazardous, public health catastrophe of morcellation unfolds in Alison Motluk’s acclaimed article, “Worth the Risk,” published in Magazine of the Year winner Maisonneuve.

The article traces the plight of Dr. Hooman Noorchashm, whose wife – Dr. Amy Reed – underwent a laparoscopic hysterectomy procedure to remove uterine fibroids. One week post-surgery, Reed received a call informing her that the excised fibroid tissue had tested positive for a rare cancer called leiomyosarcoma (LMS). Rather than the cancer being removed in one piece, with healthy margins, the laparoscopic surgery was assisted by a power morcellator; essentially, the hidden cancer had been ground up and splattered inside of Reed’s abdominal cavity. Noorchashm urgently began damage control, quickly launching a Change.org petition; his petition urged the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG) to ban morcellation.
